Beyond the Paycheck: Annie Mbako on Sweat Equity, Aligning Values and Professional Growth

The Rise of Sweat Equity Among Professionals

Talented professionals are increasingly embracing sweat equity as part of a non-traditional career path, moving away from the 9 - 5 model to align their professional values with meaningful work.

Sweat equity is a unique way for individuals to leverage their skills and experience to gain ownership in a business. It’s becoming an increasingly popular way for talented professionals to expand their experience and contribute to the startup ecosystem. For many, it offers opportunities beyond the typical side hustle, allowing them to be part of something meaningful from the ground up.

Annie Mbako's Journey into Sweat Equity

We spoke to Annie Mbako, a freelance diversity and inclusion facilitator, coach, and speaker, who has carved out a niche for herself in the tech industry in Manchester, UK. Her passion lies in helping startups and founders build inclusive processes, and she has a background in investment services and client facing functions. Annie’s journey into sweat equity began unexpectedly, driven by her attraction to organisations doing good for society.

Learning and growing through Sweat Equity

Annie first encountered the concept of sweat equity through her work with two different organisations. Initially, she didn’t even know what sweat equity was. She joined these organisations intending to earn a regular wage but found herself working for the promise of equity instead.

“I had no idea that there ever was such a thing as sweat equity,” she recalls. “I figured if I can get paid for it, great, but if not, at least I’m learning new skills and contributing to something meaningful. I was drawn to these organisations because they were doing something good for society. The founders were women with extensive experience, and it was a chance for me to learn directly from them.”

Working for these organisations, Annie gained invaluable skills and experiences. She learned the ropes of the startup world, built relationships, and broadened her professional network. These connections continue to benefit her, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

Navigating Red Flags And Ensuring Fair Compensation

Despite this, Annie faced many challenges along the way. The lack of clear agreements and structured compensation became significant issues. She quickly realised the importance of having conversations about equity and compensation early on to avoid misunderstandings.

“There were instances where I didn’t feel fairly compensated for my contributions, especially when I was involved in attracting paying clients,” Annie explains. “It was a catalyst for me to start thinking about my value and how to advocate for fair treatment.”

One of the red flags she encountered was the vague promise of equity that never materialised into formal agreements. This experience taught her the critical importance of clear communication and having everything in writing from the start.

Priceless Lessons on Value Alignment

“Conversations about equity should happen from the start to avoid misunderstandings,” Annie advises. “It’s necessary to address these issues early on, no matter how difficult the conversation might be.”

Annie’s experiences have shaped her professional philosophy. She emphasises the importance of being selective about which organisations to engage with for sweat equity. “I wouldn’t do it for just anyone. The organisation’s mission and values need to align with mine,” she says.

Reflecting on her journey, Annie highlights the importance of mutual commitment and clear communication. “You need to ensure that both parties are on the same page. It’s about creating a fair and transparent environment where everyone’s contributions are valued,” she explains.

Key takeaways from Annie’s Sweat Equity experience

Despite the hurdles, Annie has no regrets. “I’ve learned so much about myself and different working styles. These experiences have made me bolder and more confident in advocating for my value,” she shares.

At its heart, Annie’s experience underscores the value of doing work that aligns with your values and beliefs.
